FIFTH CLASS: READING & SPEAKING
DATE: Friday, April 12th, 2013
OBJECTIVE: By the end of this lesson, SWBAT introduce themselves
and others (using their name, their age, and nationality) on the first day of
class.
Before the fifth class I was
very eager to start. I did my best in making the material. During
the class, the first activity was very successful. They did it very well. I
barely needed to provide them with the instructions. The students needed to write the name of the country next
to the flag. I noticed that they
recognized the flags of the countries. If I had to change something
I would look for different flags. I also consider the possibility to ask them
to work individually for this activity.
When I was planning this
activity I thought that It would be very meaningful for the students. They
enjoyed a lot this activity. I think that students understood it very well. I
proved my theory when I asked them randomly. The aim of the activity was to
present the grammar content. I used papers with the structure and examples. I
pasted color papers with only four pronouns ( I, you, he, and she) on the
board. Then I pasted color paper color papers with the structure Where+
am/is/are + I/he/she/you + from? Then, I also included the structure of the
answer. What I would changed of this activity is ask them all to do sentences. Then, they would, one by one paste it on the board. After that I would
checked it one by one using the board.
Sample of Activity two:
QUESTION Where + am/is/are + I/he/she/you + from?
ANSWER I/he/she/you + am/is/are + from +
country
The third activity was
vey interesting. The students needed to do their own name tags. They had to
answer questions like their name, age and the nationality. In the nationality,
they had the option to say their real nationality or a different one. There were
some questions in this part which were: How old are you? what's your name? and
where are you from? . They were face to
face to do this activity. Indeed, If I had to do again this activity
I would try to stick the questions on the wall. This could be helpful for them
to see the questions, read them and practice the structure.
The fourth and fifth activities were designed so students practice reading comprehension. When I was doing the material I took into account their difficulties and strengths. The idea was to provide them with material to encouraged them to learn. The relevance of the topic was an important point to consider. I decided that it was usefull to mix this activity with the following. They had to review the material again to answer the questions. Something to improve on this activity could be either more challenging material or to and more questions because they did it easily.

T gives
Ss a handout related to some of the countries from America.
On the
left column of the page, there are some flags. On the right side, next to
each flag, there is the first and last letter of the country name, and
between the first and last letter, there’s the correct number of spaces for
each letter to be written. Elicit answers.
T
pastes color papers with the 4 personal pronouns I, you, he, and she. Then, T
pastes color papers with the structure Where
+ am/is/are + I/he/she/you + from? Also, paste the structure I/he/she/you + am/is/are + from + country
Then
paste an example for each structure. Use matching colors between structure and
example.
Then,
have some Ss form both, the question and answer, BUT use different colors.
Ss are
to make their own name tags with the following information:
Name:
Age:
Nationality:
On the
board T writes 3 questions:
What’s your name?
How old are you?
Where are you from?
Ss make
two lines with their desks. Each desk is facing a desk from the opposite
line. They practice asking and answering the three questions on the board.
